The Ultimate Review Week - Ultimates 3 #5

Published by supersearnold at 5:05 am under Comic Reviews Edit This

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood Searnold [Shár- Nŭhld]. Welcome to my comic book review blog - thanks for tuning in. Today is Sunday, October 19th, 2008. Are you interested in a comic book but not sure you want to shell out the cash? Let me know and I’ll review it for you!

Today’s Issue:
The Ultimate Review Week continues with a new release from Marvel Comics - Ultimates 3 #5. This is the final issue in the third Ultimates mini-series, taking place in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. This series is by Jeph Loeb (Heroes, Batman: Hush) with art by Joe Madureira (Uncanny X-Men, Battle Chasers). Of note - Jeph Loeb’s credits are so vast that I don’t feel I’ve done justice by listing two of his more famous projects, so here’s a link to his Wikipedia page:

Premise:
Ultimates 3 #5 explains everything that happened in Ultimates 3 #1 - #4. We actually get flashbacks from a new perspective that explain some of the things that didn’t make ANY sense whatsoever. It wraps up the story with a big battle in the Savage Land, has a surprise twist at the end, and sets the stage for the upcoming crossover event, Ultimatum.

Awesome Parts:
Thank GOD Jeph explained what was going on. I was worried he had either lost his touch or gone completely insane. If you check out my review for Ultimates 3 #1 - #4 on September 4th, 2008, you’ll see that I was not a big fan. This issue sort of made up for that. I LOVED the huge mystery reveal on the last page. Good times. You’ll have to read it yourself (or check out March On Ultimatum Saga) to see what the reveal was as I have a strict no spoilers policy. There was also an extremely hilarious reference to the multiple-year-late Ultimate Wolverine Vs. The Hulk series when Wolverine mentions some “unfinished business” between him and The Hulk. (Check out my review of Ultimate Wolverine Vs. The Hulk #1 & #2 in a couple of days.)

Un-Awesome Parts:
There’s still a lot that doesn’t really make sense. Characters are acting out of character. There was a dumb and totally obvious reveal involving Captain America. The battle scenes were terribly cluttered and too difficult to follow. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed reading this issue - I just felt a wave of relief as (despite its problems) this issue made far more sense than the previous 4.

My Recommendation:
I can’t recommend this book. It wasn’t good enough. There are two things that happened in it that you’ll probably need to know in order to follow Ultimatum. If you’re planning on reading that, pick up March On Ultimatum Saga (a free comic from Marvel which I reviewed yesterday.) It’ll explain what you need to know without you having to waste your money on this book.

That’s it for today. As always - thanks for reading - see you next time. And don’t forget to let me know if there’s a comic book you’d like me to review for you!
