The Ultimate Review Week - Ultimate Saga
Greetings from your friendly neighborhood Searnold [Shár- Nŭhld]. Welcome to my comic book review blog - thanks for tuning in. Today is Saturday, October 18th, 2008. Are you interested in a comic book but not sure you want to shell out the cash? Let me know and I’ll review it for you!
Today’s Issue:
March On Ultimatum Saga - a free comic book in stores now from Marvel Comics, written by Stuart Vandal (Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, SKRULLS!) with art by everyone who has ever contributed to the Ultimate Universe (a list too long to list here.)
Premise:
This is a free summary of the events of the Ultimate Universe thus far. It was created to hype the upcoming Ultimatum crossover. The story is told chronologically from the dawn of time up to current day (including the end of Ultimates 3 and Ultimate Origin - which I’ll be reviewing next.)
Awesome Parts:
It was great to see exactly what the chronological order for the Ultimate Universe was. It cleared up a little bit of confusion I had about the placement of a few stories. March On Ultimatum Saga is also QUITE thorough. It doesn’t include EVERY single story, but comes very close.
Un-Awesome Parts:
Major huge spoilers. It spoils the end of Ultimates 3 and Ultimate Origin (which might not have even come out yet at the time of March On Ultimatum Saga’s release. If they had, it was still quite recently.) Also, the story wasn’t told in such an entertaining way that I - who had already read the original stories - found it engaging. I don’t know if Daredevil Saga was actually written better or if I enjoyed it because I hadn’t read the original stories, but so far none of the other Sagas have lived up to it. (Check out my review of Daredevil Saga on Monday, September 15th.)
My Recommendation:
I only recommend March On Ultimatum Saga if you plan on reading Ultimatum but you don’t plan on reading any other Ultimate books. That’s probably a pretty narrow audience. March On Ultimatum Saga will definitely spoil any and all previous Ultimate books. But it will also help Ultimatum make more sense. It is free, so there’s no reason not to pick up a copy. But read at your own discresion.
That’s it for today. As always - thanks for reading - see you next time. And don’t forget to let me know if there’s a comic book you’d like me to review for you!
