Banzai Girls #4

Published by supersearnold at 5:05 am under Comic Reviews Edit This

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood Searnold [Shár-Nŭhld]. Welcome to my comic book review blog - thanks for tuning in. Today is Thursday, October 2nd, 2008.

Today’s Issue:
Banzai Girls #4 published by Arcana Studios in 2008. The story is written and illustrated by Jinky Coronado (Avalon High.) The cover price is $3.95 - but I’ve never seen the book in ANY of the many comic book stores I frequent. I got my copy for free at Sac Con.

Premise:
Robots and crazy monsters are attacking and it’s up to Jinky Coronado (yes - the character is based on the “real life” of the creator) and her group of friends to protect the town. Apparantly these creatures all came from Jinky’s nightmares. Meanwhile - Jinky’s mom (who recently married Jinky’s best friend’s dad) is giving birth.

The Awesome Parts:
I really enjoyed the art - especially the coloring job (yeah - you know it was bad if I have to compliment the art to come up with something good to say). There wasn’t a whole lot of dialogue to get in the way of the action. And - despite being issue #4 - I had no difficulties following what was going on.

The Un-Awesome Parts:
Banzai Girls #4 is thinly veiled porn. Okay - given the right audience I guess that should go under the “Awesome Parts” heading. But this stuff was PG-13 porn - so it’s not even good porn. It’s girls fighting in lingerie. If that’s your thing, this book is absolutely for you. But if you need anything else in your books - like character development or a plot that makes sense - then look elsewhere. I never felt any danger at all. This just didn’t feel like the type of story where someone would actually die. Thus - without danger - there is no suspense even in the most heated of battles. Also - there are only 18 pages of story with a cover price is $3.95! I’d consider that an outrage if they weren’t handing out the book for free at Sac Con.

My Recommendation:
I don’t think that I have veiled my opinion very well. I did not enjoy this book. I would not have paid money for it. I do not recommend it for you. I can’t even think of what type of person I would recommend this to. Even if you like girls fighting in lingerie (and let’s be honest - who amongst us doesn’t?) - I figure there have to be well-written books like that. But if you do want to check it out for yourself (or see real girls in lingerie) you can check out Jinky’s website at http://www.glasshousegraphics.com/banzaigirl/

That’s it for today. As always - thanks for reading - see you next time.
