Review of Uncanny X-Men #500

Published by supersearnold at 5:29 pm under Comic Reviews Edit This

Salutations my friend.  My name is Searnold [Shár- Nŭhld].  Welcome to my blog.

And so continues my attempt to create a comic book review blog.

One of these days I’m going to have a serious consideration about WHY I’m doing this - but until then: here we go.

Ummm… I’m very torn.  Was it an enjoyable read?  Well… kind of.  Did I like it more at the end?  Yes.  But was it a good comic book?  Eh…

Should I assume you haven’t read the issue yet and that’s why you’re reading this - to see if you should?  Then I won’t include any spoilers.  I can’t really tell you if you should read it until the arc is over.  My major problem was that all of a sudden some things were happening and they were very unexplained and I was very confused.  They cleared SOME things up at the end, and it looks like the rest of the arc will be devoted to clearing up some of the other questions.  But the ACT of reading it was difficult because of the confusion.

[Minor spoiler]  Hopefully you already knew that Magneto makes an appearance in the issue.  It is his motivation that was unclear to me.

The transition into San Francisco (that shouldn’t even be a spoiler - there’s no way you know that Uncanny X-Men #500 came out without knowing that they moved to San Francisco.)  Okay fine:

[Minor Spoiler]  The X-Men have moved their homebase from New York to San Francisco.

I like this change.  I enjoyed the transition.  I thought it was handled fairly naturally in the previous arc - it wasn’t too sudden.  They built a whole new facility which is cool looking.  I think the move works.  We’ll see how the stories work from here on in - having the X-Men so isolated from the rest of the marvel universe.

So overall - well written - yes.  And I’m pretty sure I like where they’re going with it.  But I won’t be able to actually recommend it until after the arc is over and we see what was really up with Magneto.  If they don’t explain it well, then, in my humble opinion, the issue and arc will be a failure.

Thanks for reading.  See you next time.

I’ll have to take a look at this. I’m almost done with Astonishing X-Men, so I’ll need a new X-series to get into. The San Francisco-thing sounds like a good idea; Spidey and Daredevil should have NY under control without them.
